Medical Services

As part of Professor Menahem's medical services, his consultations adopt a holistic approach trying to assess the whole child beyond the presenting complaint. Detailed cross-sectional echocardiography, electrocardiograms and Holter monitoring are available on site where required and may be undertaken at the time of the consultation. Any paediatric patient arising from his practice who is being considered for cardiac surgery is presented at the Combined Cardiac Surgical Meeting at the Royal Children’s Hospital. Any adult patient with congenital heart disease that may require intervention is discussed with the best surgeons/electrophysiologists etc, either in Melbourne or at other centres in Australia or overseas. A close association has developed with the relevant cardiac sub-specialists at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Fees

All patients seen need to be referred. Pensioners are bulk billed both for their consultations and investigations. Those in financial difficulties may have reduced accounts. His current fees still remain well below the AMA recommended fees. All referring doctors receive a detailed report shortly after the consultation, and/or a phone call if there are immediate concerns. Older patients as well as any parent that asks, receive a copy of the letter sent to the referring doctor.

During any absences from his consultant practice, experienced colleagues provide cover which include Dr Lance V Fong, Former Cardiologist at the Royal Children’s Hospital and Deputy Director of the Monash Paediatric Cardiology Unit.

Collaborations

Professor Menahem is a highly experienced Consultant Paediatrician and an established leader in Congenital Heart Cardiology. His expertise is recognised internationally, with invitations to present at international conferences and serve as a visiting professor at various institutions and universities. His focus extends beyond clinical practice, emphasising medical education and multidisciplinary research. 2023

September
Professor Menahem was invited to provide tutorials to the paediatric cardiology trainees at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, discussing in particular the clinical features of heart disease in childhood and young adults.

July
A further series of lectures were given at University at Sea.

Professor Menahem will shortly attend the World Congress of Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery held once every 4 years but delayed by 2 years because of COVID. He will be presenting 3 studies, 1 developed by a long term patient of his, while the other 2 were spearheaded by 2 of his former students.

June
An important meeting was held arranged by Mr Josh Burns, the Federal Member of Macnamara, with Ms Ged Kearney, the Federal Deputy Minister of Health, whose portfolio includes Women’s Health. The activities of the Haven for New Mothers and Babies which has been established in Melbourne in which he serves as President, were discussed in some detail. The visitors were able to inspect the two single room residential facilities set up in the home of a Jewish grandmother who has been providing a much appreciated complimentary service for new mothers over the last few years. The time spent with her has allowed the mothers to recover from the stresses of their pregnancy and the traumas of their delivery, in addition to spending quality time with their newborn infant. Ms Kearney was impressed and expressed her support. We await to learn if it may be possible to extend this concept to the community at large, especially if a Medicare rebate is struck to provide such a service as part of the postnatal care for new mothers. A research study is underway under the auspices of Monash University to further document the benefits of such a service and to assess its need within the community at large.

May
Professor Menahem visited the Department of Paediatrics on the Mount Scopus Campus of Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem and provided a series of lectures and tutorial to medical students and junior staff.

Significant Items

Haven for Mothers and Babies

Professor Menahem accepted the invitation to Head this novel initiative set up to help new mothers following their discharge from hospital which generally in Melbourne occurs after 24 – 48 hours or after surgical procedures 3 – 4 days. That arose from the experience of a Jewish grandmother who provided a complementary residential service in her own home for 1 – 2 mother’s at a time with their babies. Those who availed themselves of that facility were considerably helped and benefited considerably. That experience has been published in a paper spearheaded by one of Prof Menahem’s students.

With that information in mind, the above formal body was formed in order to see whether it may be possible to extend to the wider community, being encouraged to do so by the local member for Macnamara, Mr Josh Burns. Such a facility would allow new mothers time to recovered from the stresses of the pregnancy and the trauma of their delivery while spending quality time with their newborn infants, establishing breastfeeding and acquiring further mothercraft skills.

D Med HSc (Monash)

Professor Menahem was recently awarded a Higher Doctorate, namely Doctor of Medicine and Health Sciences from the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University for his Thesis entitled, “Psychosocial and Ethical Issues Related to Congenital Heart Disease: From the Foetus to the Adult – A Tribute to the Mothers of Affected Offspring”. It describes his body of work relating to more than 80 published papers on these themes. The Thesis received excellent reviews by three external examiners at Harvard and Sydney Universities. Many of the studies reported within the Thesis were multidisciplinary in nature, involving medical and surgical colleagues and allied health clinicians including psychologists, medical social worker etc. The undergraduate and postgraduate students who spearheaded some of the studies successfully completed research degrees ranging from Bachelors to Masters to Doctorates with Distinction wherever applicable. Arising from some of the observations and conclusions further translational/interventional studies may evolve which hopefully will benefit affected individuals and improve the wellbeing of their families.

A copy of the Thesis will be available at the Rooms in Caulfield for perusal for those who may wish to read some of the work done.
